The reprints are divided into several categories describing the neurophysiological model of tinnitus, its clinical implementation, and an animal model of tinnitus. Two papers related to salicylate (aspirin) and its potential dangerous effects when combined with noise or stress are included as this finding may have a profound effect on the health of the general population. This is a fundamental paper in which the model is introduced and other approaches to tinnitus are discussed. Rather difficult. Not recommended as initial reading.

The introduction in this paper provides a concise comparison of previous models and approaches to tinnitus with the neurophysiological model. The clinical data presented support our model and argue against common errors, such as the belief that treatment outcome is related to tinnitus loudness or its maskability — it is not! This paper is somewhat difficult, but I would recommend reading the introduction and discussion.

Presents the results of a long-term study showing that about 20% of the patients treated with our approach exhibited periods of time, up to a few weeks, when they were not able to hear their tinnitus even when they tried to. The study was done on 150 patients, and presently we are continuing to collect data from an additional 100 patients.

To my knowledge, this is the first paper to present abnormal neuronal activity which may be related to tinnitus in a large number of neurons, and recorded under conditions when animals were shown to perceive tinnitus. Notably, the results point out specific categories of mechanisms involved in tinnitus and suggest types of drugs which may be effective.
